Hallway street signs yay...

Hallway plan
Maria Stengos & Daniella Fryters

Task: The Lourdes Beautification Committee hallway signs

The shape of the sign is made to look antique because our school is in the older area of town. If it had been in the newer area of town, then a more modern sign would have made more sense. It is a fairly simple design, so it is easy to glance at regardless of the decor, we thought it was best to use school colours: navy blue and yellow. We decided not to use the school logo since it would take away from the letters and be too distracting and busy looking. The marble affect on the back in the navy blue: just adds to the look of the rest of the sign and makes it less plain and more interesting.

Umbrella Pig

psdGraphics.com
For the sky background, I used a splatter filter to give it a less realistic look. I copied the layer of the original sky to lighten it slightly and blended it into the original sky by simply making it more transparent.
I got the picture of the pig and removed the background. I painted over the original pig image, using some of the original colours of his skin.

For all the umbrellas they all have the same smudge stick filter on them and were all cut out from the original photos they were in. The pink umbrella I blended slightly into the pig to give the impression that it was carrying the pig into the sky.

Instead of the typical 'when pigs can fly' pictures when they have angel wings-which is extremely overdone- I decided to give it more of a Rene Magritte style. I gave it a surrealistic look to fit the unrealistic nature of the picture. It happened to be raining on the day I started to work on this picture which explains the umbrellas. Since not many people like rain and get depressed by the dark sky and wet outdoors, this picture represents the end of the storm and the relief that comes after it in the form of a pig carried by an umbrella, while being surrounded by other umbrellas, which are a symbol for shelter from the rain.

CD cover- Three Days Grace

The single "Break" Adam Gontier (lead vocals/guitar) says: explores not being controlled by your surroundings or environment. "It's about breaking away from being told what to do and living the life that you want to live." I based my design off of this idea and from the song 'Break' it's self.

On their actual official website they have a brick wall background with them at the top of the page. Otherwise a brick wall seemed appropriate since the theme I made is about breaking the walls that surround you, and to break free of the things you don't like and aren't you. The glass break in the wall is pretty self explanatory to the theme. And the band in the break of the wall just shows that they aren't pretending to be something they are not and they have broken free.

Colour choice was all gray, black, white, and red because they are dark and very affective, and seem to be there preferred colours from their past album covers, pictures and website.

The stick people with check marks and an X mark is from a previous CD cover and also seemed to fit nicely with the theme, the one person who is different from the others, broke free from being the same.

Their songs have powerful themes, real things and address powerful feelings: loss, betrayal, death...etc. Things that aren't about Utopia, and happy feelings. Adam Gontier (lead vocals/guitar) says "“The events of the past few years have made us more aware of what life really can be,” Therefore it was very befitting to add the anime boy in the corner who seems to be thinking deeply about life.

Triptych - inspiration from home

I didn't know what to do for this project so  I randomly took pictures of things and somehow I think this works out. All of them have been rough pastle filtered and only the top one was cropped. Otherwise I played with the colours, lighting and saturation.

Triptych

FRUITY

For the orange piture at the top I adjusted the sturation a bit, lightened the picture slightly, and put a filter thats name suddenly escapes me, possibly cutout. Since I had taken the picture the way I thought I would crop it I only needed to cut of the edges a bit.
For the Blue as well I didn't crop it too much only the edges were cut off slightly. I lightened the picture and adjusted the saturation. the same filter on it.
The last on Green was flipped to match the Orange one a bit better, agjusted saturationa abnd lightened photo and no need for cropping once again.
It seems fitting for the only square looking one go in the middle and the others on the outside.
All of these are from the vending machines because I was bored out of my mind and saw the blue square on the gatoraid vending machine and then since I liked that so much went to the other vending machines. To my dismay there where no squares so I just took these in hopes it would work out. An orange and a lime!
Other than that there is practically nothing in this school that is very inspriational.

PUDDLES

For all of these I played withe the hue and saturation and darkened the photos and put a filter on them (fresco). Did a little cropped them so that the stick on the top and bottom pitures where both at the corner of the page with the thought in mind that they would be the outside pictures and the big leaf would be in the middle. I liked the way the red popped out when I was doing the first picture so I decided to do it this way.
Funny for those who thought we were abusing time kindly given, infact art has to be inspired and if it is not something the artist likes then they have put no soul into their work. Sometimes its spotanious and sometimes you have to sit around and do nothing for something to come.

Multicultural Festival poster 2011...contest are anoying

It wasn't what I had originally hoped to make but I pieced this picture together keeping in mind diversity and cultures. To not single any country out and, to avoid being offensive, I coloured all these people different colours and some in the most common colours on flags (Red, Blue, Black, White, Green, Yellow). The world is placed on the maple leaf as a way to show that we are multicultural. To show the world coming to Canada and all people of different cultures coming together on their own walks of life.
I got the idea for the earth on the flag from Futurama where their flag has earth from the earth day episode.

I'm not made for the advertisment buisness. I like things to have deep meaning and to have people think about it not only just glance get it and walk away.

Voting poster

Even though it seems logical for there to be a technology oriented or, music something that would attract the target audience our fellow students. Sometimes shock images are just as effective. I didnt want to try too hard and give them a imagine that was clearly trying to target th
em. This was the first image that popped in my mind. It can have double meaning. 1. that we actually get the oportunity to vote and can make decsions while some countries have no choice and no oportunity so end up staring out into a surpressed surounding where the people in charge are not who they would preferable chose. Since we get a choice we get to look out at a nice backyard and can decide to pick the people who were best take care of things that effect us.
2. Is that if we do vote we can probebly keep a nice life and it will hopefully benifit us greatly. If we continue to ignore it we could end up like the frame to the right. we obviously wouldnt have one or the other but just the idea that it makes it all worst if we don't vote.

Photo Journalists

With all the new technology that we have today to alter photographs it gets harder and harder to figure out if the picture is 100% true. Back in the day photographs were simple and unaltered seeking truth in the captured moment good and bad but as they were. Today's photojournalism, people can still seek, but unfortunately do it better and sneak into people’s private lives. The celebrities put themselves in a position to be stalked by cameras. Not to say that they deserve these meddlers in their lives but they are put in a world were that’s just what happens. Some even go as far to seek attention and actually want to be caught in bad behavior to make a name for themselves.
Photographers should have a bit more respect for the people they are taking a picture of. If they see someone dying they should help them and put down the camera, when and only if there is a situation in which the person in the picture is not in immediate danger the shoot can be taken to show the truths of the event. As for celebrities, It is our fault that photographers go after the bush photo's and creep around because we want to see scandalize things, and what the people we idolize are really like. If we didn't treat celebrities as gods then I would say that photographers should have some boundaries and a bit more respect. Since it is not so the only ruled I'd want to really enforce is that if the image is potentially damaging or taking the photo instead of helping them not to be done and shown.

Poetry cover

It's hands reaching a Rose because it is a break for expression (a perfect example of  arts program now) The constant struggle to be original and different and express your own art. A Rose because it makes a good image and roses symbolize beauty and can be used to convay different emotions like death, and love used in art.

Photograpic portrait colour play

Original

Enhanced

Jessica Feeney again in spectacular colours. I ajusted the hue and saturation. Changed the hue of her skin to a yellow green and made the greens stand out a bit more. Added more saturation to the yellows. Brightened the cryans magenta's and reds. Brightening the cryans made the background really then the blue helped to give it a faded look to magenta and to red in the mirror. Cropped the photo

Photograpgic portrait black and white

Original picture

Enhanced picture

From the picture I took of the one and only Jessica Feeney, I converted it to black and white adding a bit of red to brighten up the picture. I cropped the picture so her face was easier to see. The picture was also brightened to show her face and some shadows darkened. I added more contrast and made it a bit sharper so it wasn't as blurry. Using the clone stamp, I copied the back ground to get rid of lines on the wall behind her. I especially like this picture because it looks like shes  fascinated and fearful of the light.

Digital landscape: Mushroom Desert

This picture is called the mushroom desert because it's a desert and it/s full of mushrooms but there is more meaning than just that. It's the mind of a person just about to lose it and go insane.I have left the entire background as it was since I found a photo that just fit right into what I was doing.
Everything is in black and white to give it a dark feeling. I added a Victorian house in the middle where the clouds center towards the house and I lightened it slightly so it would stand out. The house is therefore the brightest thing and the place where sanity still lives.

Right above the house I added a cloud that I darkened and that looks like a person (does in the original picture as well) because insanity is always lurking around. A bit hard to notice, but I placed three faces in the clouds, cloud faces that I blended the best I could and made more transparent. They represent the voices in an insane persons head or maybe split personalities.

Next was the mushrooms, which is the same mushroom copied five times and lightened or darkened depending on which side of the picture they were placed. Mushrooms are usually associated with drugs but here I just meant them to be a sign of seeing illusions.

The frog I placed at the front so he was more noticeable and tried to blend him into the ground slightly. The frog is wearing a king's crown which is unusual for a frog and also represents illusion and seeing things that are not really there.

At the back I hid another frog but an unrealistic one that is actually made of wood.  I placed him in a shadow and made him more transparent, so he looks like he is disappearing. This contradicts with the real frog: as in in real v.s fake. The person can't tell the difference anymore and thinks they are the same and therefore doesn't need two because they believe what they see no matter how strange it is.

I also hid a skull in a darker corner so it looks like part of the mountain as a kind of lurking danger feeling. And lastly there is an explosion that creepily looks like a clown and that I have darkened and added more contrast, and made more transparent too. Chaos has broke loose and is randomly exploding and destroying what is there, getting closer to the house like impending doom.

Media arts

I am excited about this course because it just seems like a lot of fun and something I will enjoy doing unlike math which I hate with a passion. I do agree to "uphold" the Studio Rules the best I can.
